Age Related Macular Degeneration
Let's face it, we're all getting older. But just as wisdom increases with age, so does age related macular degeneration, or AMD. AMD is the world's leading cause of central vision loss. We've broken down the AMD facts to help you understand how age related vision loss affects you.

What is AMD?
AMD is a loss of central vision. It occurs when the cells and blood vessels in your eye weaken, leaving deposits that damage your macula. This affects your macula's ability to send messages to your brain, slowly resulting in vision loss.

AMD Symptoms
The most common symptom of age related macular degeneration is poor central vision. Failure to treat AMD can result in permanent blind spots. Test your vision now to see if you are suffering from AMD.
Types of AMD
- Dry AMD is the most common type of AMD and is found in about 90% of AMD cases. Dry AMD is less severe than Wet AMD and gradually weakens your vision. As a result many people do not recognize the symptoms until it is too late.
- Wet AMD is found in 10% of AMD cases and can severely affect your eyes in as little as a month. Weak blood vessels grow in the back of your eye and begin to leak, resulting in a fragile macula. The damage is typically swift and permanent.
There have been many new developments for age related macular degeneration. Photodynamic therapy, or PDT, is a new treatment for Wet AMD. By injecting a drug called Visudyne into the bloodstream and undergoing a short laser treatment, the laser "activates" the drug and helps destroy abnormal blood vessels in the eye. This procedure can be done by your eye doctor and involves several visits for the treatment to be effective.Check out AMD News Articles to find up to the minute info on Dry AMD.
