Eye Health News Update: Cataract Surgery does not worsen macular degeneration. Archives of Ophthalmology just published a study by Doctors Li Ming Dong, Stark, Jefferys, Al-Hazzaa, S. Bressler, Solomon, N. Bressler, entitled, "Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration After Cataract Surgery." The conclusion of the study was that the low incidence rate of neovascular age-related macular degeneration development between one week and one year after cataract surgery did not support the hypothesis that cataract surgery resulted in an increase in the risk of age-related disease progression. Several eyes appeared to have disease progression on postsurgery week one on fluorescein angiograms, suggesting that many cases of presumed progression to neovascular macular degeneration following cataract surgery may have been already present before cataract surgery, but not recognized due to poor visualization of the retina through the cataract.

Age Related Macular Degeneration can result in the inability to read letters and see central visual details. The Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) showed that vitamin supplements containing high-doses of Anti-Oxidants and Zinc reduced the likelihood of progression of intermediate and advanced degrees of macular degeneration by 25%!
