Macular degeneration typically occurs as people age and affects senior eye health by causing retinal thinning and atrophy. This is known as dry macular degeneration or sometimes atrophic macular degeneration. Typical age-related macular degeneration symptoms include drusen and retinal pigment atrophy. In some patients, macular degeneration progresses to wet macular degeneration, also known as exudative macular degeneration. In these people, there is abnormal growth of new retinal blood vessels, known as neovascular membranes, that leak protein and bleed below the retinal surface, and can cause abrupt and severe vision loss.

The National Eye Institute's Age Related Eye Disease Study, published in 2001, showed that high dose nutritional supplementation slowed the progression of macular degeneration. However, this formula included the precursor form of Vitamin A, known as beta-carotene. This compound was shown in two large studies to increase the chance of lung cancer in smokers. Therefore, it is widely considered by ophthalmologists, optometrists and other physicians to be unsafe for smokers and former habitual smokers to take the National Eye Institute formula.

VisiVite Smokers Formula exactly duplicates four out of five of the ingredients in the National Eye Institute vitamin supplement formula but makes one important substitution. Rather than using the carotenoid, beta carotene, VisiVite Smokers Macular Degeneration Formula uses FloraGLO brand lutein derived from Marigold flowers. Additionally, unlike other manufactures that use synthetic dl-Alpha Vitamin E, VisiVite uses naturally derived d-Alpha Vitamin E. Take one capsule twice daily. Capsules may be opened into food or drink for patients that have difficulty swallowing.

I was first advised two years ago that I had the beginnings of Macular Degeneration. This past year I was told by the Opthamologist at the Durham NC VA that presently there was no cure for this disease that I should take Vitamins for AREDS and to stop smoking. The Eye Specialist at the Durham VA are from the Duke University Hospital.

I had already quit , but had been a heavy smoker so I begin to look for the Vitamins Formular for Smokers or past smokers. I could not find any in our Local Phamacies nor in Wal mart. So I truned to the internet and Vision Nutrition. I have been taking the Visivite Smokers Formula for almost a year now.

During that time I have looked at the Chart given to me by the VA. Checking this chart daily should alert me to further degeneration or movement from dry to wet macular. So far the lines on the chart remain straight.

The Vitiamins are the only defense I have and they seem to be working. I have tried another brand that finally was available at a Local Walmart, it is cheaper but you get less of the active important ingredients in the formular. I am continuing at this time to order from Visivite.

Question: Your company lists several different formulas for a smoker/former smoker to use. Can you please tell me the difference so that I can make a decision on which one to purchase. Thank you.
Answer: In order of potency, lowest to highest: VisiVite Smokers Formula has 8 mg Lutein instead of beta carotene from AREDS. VisiVite Red Formula is a modified AREDS formula with 15 mg FloraGLO Lutein. VisiVite Green Formula is a modified AREDS formula with 15 mg FloraGLO Lutein and 4.75 mg OPTISHARP zeaxanthin. VisiVite Premier Ocular Formula No. 2 is an AREDS2 formula with 10 mg FloraGLO Lutein, 2 mg Zeaxanthin, and ROPUFA Omega 3 fatty acids; Premier 2 is made with the exact ingredients from manufacturers that supply the National Eye Institute.

Question: My history of smoking is from age 18 to 38 and 50 to 51. I'm now 68. Do I need the smoker's formula?
Answer: If you have habitually smoked within 20 years, we recommend that you do not take high dose beta carotene.
