Wet Macular Degeneration
Understanding Wet Macular Degeneration
1. There are two types of Age Related Macular Degeneration. The two forms of AMD are dry macular degeneration and wet macular degeneration. Although both forms can cause extreme vision loss, dry macular degeneration is the less severe version of AMD. Wet macular degeneration only occurs in about 10% of people diagnosed with AMD, but typically causes permanent blindness in a short amount of time.
2. Wet AMD occurs as a result of blood vessels under the retina.
New blood vessels, called choroidal neovascularization, grow under the retina in the eye. This dramatically disturbs the normal functioning of the retina and causes intense hemorrhage and swelling in the eye.
3. Central vision loss is one of the main symptoms.
The new blood vessels that develop under the retina force the macula to lift up. This typically causes rapid central vision loss. A wet AMD patient will often see dark spots in the center of their vision. In addition, straight lines will appear wavy. Test your vision now using the Amsler Grid Test to discover if you have AMD symptoms.
4. There may be a treatment for Wet Macular Degeneration.
Although these treatments are not successful in all wet AMD sufferers, laser photocoagulation and photodynamic therapy have been shown to be effective in some patients. Laser photocoagulation works to stop the new blood vessels from leaking into the eye. Photodynamic therapy, commonly called Visudyne therapy, has shown to be successful in some AMD patients. It uses a light-activated drug which destroys the new blood vessels.
5. Taking Macular Degeneration Vitamins can help slow the onset of AMD.
At VisiVite.com, we have mirrored the ingredients in our eye vitamins to the vitamins used in the AREDS and AREDS-2 studies performed by the National Eye Institute. The studies showed that large doses of Anti-Oxidants and Zinc can slow the progression of AMD. Check out our VisiVite Original AREDS Formula to start combating the dangerous effects of wet macular degeneration.
