Copper doesn’t help your macular degeneration. Surprised?

Copper doesn’t help your macular degeneration. Surprised?

Supplied as cupric oxide (also known as copper oxide), the copper in your AREDS 2 eye vitamins has zero benefit in supporting eye health. It’s put in there for only one reason - to prevent anemia resulting from the high level of zinc that’s also in your eye vitamin.

In high doses, zinc can reduce copper absorption from the gut, and copper is essential for absorbing iron in order to make hemoglobin and red blood cells. So when you’re taking lots of zinc, you need to also take copper to prevent this issue. At VisiVite, we keep the zinc to copper ratio as 40 to 1, which is the identical ratio as used in the National Eye Institute AREDS and AREDS 2 studies. For VisiVite AREDS 2 White Formula, which contains no zinc, there is also no need for copper.
