November is Diabetes Awareness Month and many people do not realize that this disease can have devastating effects on their eyes. Approximately 18 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes. Three times that many people are at risk for getting the disease. Diabetes is a disease that impacts the entire body and people with diabetes are at a much higher risk of losing their vision than people without diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss in diabetics. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you need to be sure and notify your eye doctor and have regular eye exams.
