Coenzyme Q-10 — also known as Co Q-10 — is an antioxidant with a variety of benefits. Co Q-10 has been shown to support the cardiovascular system, cognitive function and nervous system health. In addition, it plays a role in helping the body convert food to energy. Coenzyme Q-10 also promotes the recycling of Vitamin E in the body, and can be absorbed into the outer layers of the skin to provide its beneficial properties.
Although Co Q-10 is naturally found in every cell in the human body, scientific studies indicate that Co Q-10 levels have a tendency to decline with age. Those taking Statin medication for their cholesterol should be especially aware of how much Co Q-10 they are getting from their diets, since Statins can reduce Co Q-10 levels in the body. A review study found that eight out of nine controlled clinical trials with Statins resulted in significant depletions of Co Q-10 levels.
Coenzyme Q-10 is not intended to serve as a replacement for Statin therapy, nor should you discontinue taking any prescribed medications while supplementing with Coenzyme Q-10.
